CREEPY OBSERVER
PHOTOGRAPHY BY LYNN BERNARDI
Hello.
I'm a professional photographer based in Detroit, MI. After spending years concentrating on commercial work that paid the bills, I've created this site as a place to house my personal work and to talk shop.
I use a wide range of gear and have a particular soft spot for unusual lenses and vintage glass & bodies.
If you're in the metro Detroit area and interested in collaborating, feel free to contact me. One of my goals this year is to shoot more creative portraits.

A couple weeks back, when it was still far too cold to contemplate doing a photo walk outside, Andy and I found ourselves at the venerable John K King Bookstore in Detroit. This place is such an institution, not sure why we don't visit it more often. Recently I've been moving all our photography books from home to our studio. I just never look at them at home because I've got no good place with great light where I can spread them out and pour over them without worrying about a random pet jumping on the table and messing them up. It seemed much wiser to bring them to the studio, but it's been an ordeal because our studio is on the second floor and photo books are HEAVY. And one day when we eventually move I'm really going to be questioning my life choices. But in the meantime, I'm finally spending some time actually looking at the books I've collected, and realizing it's been far too long since I've added any new titles. That needed to change, so my sneaky idea was to say we were going to John King to just browse and maybe take a couple photos, but I planned to scour the photography section for some new additions to the photo library.

Fuji XT-5, Minolta 58mm 1.4
Honestly didn’t expect to like anything coming off this card, so I loaded it in Lightroom first before pulling the X100 files. I was pretty frustrated I didn’t have a 16mm lens to capture all the ugly in its full splendor. God this mall was hideous. Since everyone walking around photographing it was recounting Lakeside lore, I feel like I must include that when we originally came here as kids, it felt like a day trip, and it required driving down a dusty unpaved dirt road that is now the multilane horror show known as Hall Road.
Do note the guy in the Lord & Taylor storefront who was jamming over the tiny tot play area with some haunting guitar. It was weird, surreal, and beautiful and exactly fitting. Thank you for your service.

Hey, if you are a human being and live in metro Detroit and want to do some portraits, reach out. @andyschwartz just got a new camera and I have a bunch of new-to-me vintage lenses and we are both itching shoot more film and do more personal work involving people. Would love to connect with local artists/creatives/performers (or really anyone) willing to join us on a photo walks and see what happens. It may be weird, it may be awesome, it may be crap. We’ll find out. Send a DM.
Here’s a couple more from my Hasselblad roll at matthaei.

A couple frames from today at @matthaeinichols. Finally shooting on our Hasselblad. We bought a 500cm back in 2013 and only used it a handful of times before something broke. Because the lens is coupled to the camera, we managed to break both the camera and the 80mm Zeiss lens it came with. We finally found a place to repair it last year but the guy couldn’t fix it and literally handed us back the camera and a box of parts he had taken out. 😭 But he did give us a deal on a 500c body and we recently got a 150mm lens for it. So, the only original part of this kit is the film back and the waist level finder. But anyway, it’s fun to shoot. I massively underestimated my ability to handhold this camera so a few are soft, but I’m relieved it seems to be working. Thanks to @expressphoto85 for developing our stuff same day.

This has apparently, and unexpectedly, turned into the summer of cats. I started feeding a “feral” tuxedo late this spring. He’s become a regular visitor. I can now (just barely) pet him. Then more started coming. Not convinced they are all homeless, so I mainly just fed the original one, but I’m also kinda a sucker and give the others treats. In June a cat in very bad shape started showing up on our cameras but she was too scared to come out in our presence — until she decided to just crawl into our house last week. She was in really pitiful shape but she’s already doing much better. So now we have a cat again. We lost our last cat to old age last summer and I thought we were done with cats for awhile.
I’m still trying to get the original tuxedo socialized so I can get him vetted and fixed. I hope he will be willing to give up life on the streets, but we’ll see how it goes.

The Smile 2023 Tour photo dump. What I would give to be able to bring a real camera into these shows for print quality files to hang, though that said, I also don’t want to take photos at all so I can be fully immersed. As much as I feel jealous watching the press photographers in front of the barricade, the idea of leaving the show after 3 songs is unbearable. If you ever want a tour documentary photographer @thesmiletheband, look me up!
We were lucky enough to get in the front row for the @agoracle show in Cleveland, and the Laval show at @placebell. (Shoutout to the latter for having a great setup for the GA folks, though the line kinda went to shit at the end when they transitioned us from single file to 4-across. Luckily we were numbers #3 & #4, so not an issue for us.) Both shows were absolutely incredible, but Laval was my favorite of the two, great energy in the crowd. People are already so hyped for Bending Hectic, the excitement in the building is palpable before the opening bars. Teleharmonic was also outstanding, and the other new songs really gelled for me at the Laval show.
This band and the frequency of their tours is such a gift. I also can’t attend these shows and not be impressed by the absolute professionalism of the crew & security, everyone involved is a class act. And of course, like every show, we saw familiar faces and made new friends, which is part of the experience I enjoy more and more each year. There is no fan community like the Radiohead community. Can’t wait for the new album and to do it all again, next year hopefully?

🐞Evening ladybug release. Picked up ladybugs from @english_gardens over the weekend and let them loose in the garden last night. A ladybug can eat up to 5k aphids in its lifetime! These guys will keep the garden pest free as it recovers from the recent hail damage.
Hoping the third time is a charm, IG keeps stripping the music from this.

Vibe check: are you feeling more “defeated doll face down in an abandoned basement” or “triumphant Spider-Man torso surveying your broken kingdom from your vacuum cleaner throne” today?
These are dSLR scans from the first roll of film I’ve shot since at least…..2003ish? A little over a month ago I fell down a rabbit hole thanks to @50_shades_of_jason’s YouTube channel, which I basically devoured and then dragged @andyschwartz down along with me. This led to us digging out our assorted film cameras, replacing seals (well Andy did that part), buying even more film cameras on goodwill/ebay, and a new ritual of scouring drugstores for film. Because why not get back into film when prices are so high it’s making news and supply is at its lowest?
We finally got our first 5 rolls back yesterday which was both humbling & exciting.
My first roll had to be shot with the Canon FTb, which is the body I got started with at age 15. (The original is sadly long gone, thanks to a car break-in.) It’s crazy how something like seeing an exposure meter you stared at for years can bring you back in time the same way a nostalgic song can. That camera still just feels like an extension of me.
Still figuring out @negativelabpro and how to tame the dust from scanning, and there’s a lot about these first rolls that are just rough. But I sorta love them anyway. It’s so funny how the imperfections that used to frustrate me with film are now things I kind of appreciate after 15 years of my eyes being plugged into an all digital workflow. There really is something about film that digital can never fully emulate.

🇺🇦Caught the end of the #standwithukraine flash mob at Hart Plaza this afternoon when we spotted it from the people mover.
I can’t believe we’re at the one year mark. I was glued to the news when the invasion started, they were predicting Kyiv would fall within days, but clearly the world was about to learn a few things about the will of the Ukrainian people.

Guess the Heidelberg Project is still kinda a thing. Missing at least 2-3 houses since the last time I’ve been there. Shot film for the first time in a good 10 years, but didn’t finish the roll, so no images yet. These are from the Fuji x-e4 with the @meike_global 35mm 0.95.

We got the @meike_global 35mm 0.95 for FujiX mount today. Here’s a couple of my first photos from it, taken thru a window on a dark street hours after sunset. Wanted to see how hard it would be to manually focus in a really dark setting. Impressed so far. These were all shot wide open at 0.95.

Weird to think that we’re going into our 3rd year at our studio in the Elevator Building. We started our lease during high covid. Back then I was so paranoid about catching the ‘vid that I didn’t even bother exploring the neighborhood around the studio much. Now it’s one of my favorite things about renting there.

I’m literally stalking sunlight at this point.
Detroit only averages 75 sunny days a year, and yet it still feels like we are underperforming for January. It’s hard being a photographer in the 7th most overcast state, especially when the 6 states that are even worse off have mountains and oceans to help make up for it.
I came to the realization somewhat recently that it’s been years since I’ve even attempted shooting anything for myself, or for fun. Every time I picked up a camera, it was for a job. I’m trying to change that. Andy (@andyschwartz) got me 2 Fuji bodies for Xmas/my birthday and I am really digging them. They are so small and lightweight, it’s easy to take one or both everywhere. But it’s still tough when the sun won’t cooperate.

I’m just still reeling from last night’s show at The Masonic Temple. Toronto was wonderful, a 10/10 performance, but last night was special. The boys were on fire in Detroit. Much better energy in the crowd and Thom was more playful & chatty with the audience.
Afterwards we got a set list (!), and our first proper meeting with Thom. (!!!) We’ve gotten a couple things signed before but always it was dumb luck passing something over people so we never were face to face or able to say thank you properly. And it was always Andy, not me. I honestly don’t care about signatures, but it just gives nervous people like me something to do when it’s my turn in line. Wish I had prepared better what I wanted to say, but even when there was just a few people ahead of me I didn’t really think it was going to happen. Met Tom Skinner as well. Both of them were just lovely, kind, and very patient and I was really proud my hometown represented so well and we were MUCH better behaved than Toronto.
What I didn’t expect is that we actually had Thom laughing when it was our turn and he was so charming and genuinely funny. I still can’t believe it really happened. They say don’t meet your heros, but it’s so fucking wonderful when you do and you get confirmation that they really are awesome people.
Stage was bigger and even though we had front row for both, it felt like we could see better because everything was spread out in a more open fashion.
I’m just still in awe and starting to feel the post-show blues. It was great catching up with our RH friends too after years without shows - @hayleedub, @jodilibra, and @amore427 who is responsible for us getting extra time hanging out in front with Thom & Tom. Watching Thom greet people who were just utterly starstruck and putting them at ease was just so wholesome. I just feel like they are really enjoying this stage of their careers and it makes me so happy as a longtime fan. What a fucking night. New album coming means another tour is practically guaranteed. Can’t wait to do it all again. 🖤

Sigur Rós • Detroit
Seventh time seeing this band over 20 years. Thank you @sigurros for an incredible show, @iamjonsi leaves me in awe once again. Just unbelievable. It gets better and better. And thanks to whatever crew member threw a set list directly at us. ❤️

Yesterday I finally made the leap to mirrorless. I have been a 5D user for at least a decade now and to say I was resistant was an understatement. Not a fan of electronic viewfinders, and I love our robust collection of EF glass - lenses I never thought in a million years I would even get to try, much less own when I was hobbyist in my 20’s. But editing the files coming out of Andy’s R5 slowly made me a believer. There’s no denying the autofocus on the 5D has always sucked, and my frustration with it hit breaking point a long time ago.
Anyway, today I set out to take my first photos with the R5 and I also decided to try a new lens, @lomography’s Petzval 55mm. Manual focus with the ability to have focus peaking is a real game changer. What a joy to use. Ironically, despite being hella excited about effortless, consistent autofocus I can actually trust without overshooting, I spent 4 hours today playing with manual focus lenses and loving it. I can see myself using my “toy” lenses a lot with this body.
As for this 55mm Petzval, I love it. Still figuring it out, but it’s crazy sharp (photo #3 is a 100% crop of #2) and I’m digging the look. But I already am wishing the 85mm came in an RF mount.

Some shots from a rainy walk yesterday with the OG #sonyrx100 because I left my slr at the studio and I couldn’t find our newer rx100. Still such a fun little camera, but it struggles to focus in lower light, and gets noisy fast. I need to start shooting things more interesting than random macros & textures, but I don’t even know how to find portrait subjects. I haven’t really photographed people since pre-pandemic.

I think I broke the algorithm on this account because I use it so infrequently, but I’m trying to revive it. I’m also using it as an opportunity to get out and shoot more photos that aren’t for @stylishdetroit.
Anyway, if you see this post, do me a favor and say hi. (Gotta juice that algorithm!) Tell me what you’re reading, what album is playing on repeat, or what you’re currently obsessed with.
Anyone else seeing ladybugs 🐞everywhere the last few days? I noticed them all over the trees and on my screens outside the last few days. And I found this one inside hanging out in my succulents. Is this a fall thing? I don’t remember seeing them this late in the year.

Sometimes I feel like my experience shooting weddings & interiors has kind of broken me creatively. When I first got into photography I loved working with film, and old half-broken cameras that didn’t always behave. I didn’t set out to take photos with any preconceived expectation or goals. I didn’t expect to ever make this a real mortgage-paying profession or to be able to afford the fancy gear I drooled over.
Now I have so many tools to get as technical as I want, and I feel bogged down. I haven’t shot a personal project in so long I can’t even remember. I cull images that are more than a 1/3 stop off, or where I can’t count pores or eyelashes when zoomed into 100% because they are just the teeny tiniest bit out of focus. Yet when I look at other people’s work, the stuff that moves me the most has little to do with technical perfection.
I almost feel like I need permission to be playful again and not worry about whether images turn out. I’d love to start shooting people again but I’m not even sure how to get started with that in a non-work capacity.
I was gifted two @lensbabyusa lenses over the holidays - the Velvet 56 and the Sol 45. I’m still not sure about the velvet, the soft focus “glow” is really hard to reckon with as an eyelash-counting pixel-peeper. I think I need to test that one out more. But I’m really loving the Sol 45, which reminds me of my first generation LensBaby and my old Bakelite medium format cameras that had a sweet spot of focus.
Being forced to shoot manual focus is both challenging (I’m sorely in need of an updated eyeglass prescription but I’m too freaked to go until I’m vaccinated) and a bit humbling. I’m trying not to too anal retentive about overshooting with these lenses to get perfect focus. I feel like these are really good tools to force me to get over myself and stop trying to make everything perfect.
Yesterday my whole day got derailed and I was super irritated and when I was finally able to work, I couldn’t concentrate. So I grabbed a camera and went for a walk. Didn’t shoot anything especially interesting, but god it felt good to just take photos that weren’t for anyone else.
We’re tying to shoot some products in the studio and as I can’t shop in person for props, I’ve just started gathering random items from the house. I doubt I’ll even end up using this stuff, but I had to at least show off this scarf I knitted last year. (Pattern is Guernsey Wrap from @jared_flood / @brooklyntweed)
.
For the camera nerds, this is an Olympus Pen EE, a curious little 35mm that shoots half-frames. Note the vertical viewfinder and the light meter wrapped around the lens.

I’ve reached the “buy expensive French cookware and braise a roast for 3 hours” stage of the pandemic. A couple weeks ago I learned about the water drop trick to make stainless steel pans nonstick, and that made me decide it was time to buy a good stainless pan. That led me to researching All-Clad, which led me to Sur La Table and there I discovered all the pretty @lecreuset colors, and then I decided what I *really* needed was to upgrade my lodge cast iron pans and I should really get a Dutch oven too, but I couldn’t choose a color, so I got a couple pieces. The price on the 6.75 wide Dutch oven was too good to pass up. But it is *enormous* for two people. I was worried it was too big, but Meijer curbside gave me a roast 3lbs larger than I ordered, so it kinda worked out and now we’ll be eating this for days.
.
The dogs even got a fancy roast beef & potatoes dinner tonight so they are living their best lives. Sunny usually barks continuously when I make their dinner but he just watched in stunned silence looking at me like “OMG IS THIS REALLY HAPPENING?!?”
.
I’m still eying the All-Clad and some better knives. And this can all be blamed on some stupid YouTube video about cooking that popped up while looking at something else. The perils of the internet. Nine months into cooking at home, it was time for some upgrades.🤷🏻♀️
